About Us

The Work

The First Nations Internet Exchange Society’s purpose is to address the digital divide for First Nations communities and citizens through education, leadership, and mentorship as part of its core functions.

It is also a pathway for engineers and technology professionals to interact in a safe space between organizations, individuals, and Indigenous communities.

The Opportunity

Create a space for the collaboration of technical expertise, indigenous knowledge keepers, enterprise thought leaders and community enthusiasts as ally’s and project development through peering and partnerships.

The Action

It is the mandate of the board of directors and members at large to support promotion of the implementation, operations, and innovations of an Internet Exchange Point (IXP) in the Vancouver area and support other regions in the Province of BC. Partnerships with other IXP locations for sharing best practices and joint projects are also part of value-added efforts with identified key industry and community partnerships.

FNIXS recognizes the traditional territories of the Sema:th and Matsqui First Nations where the organization is located, and we greatly appreciate as visitors in these lands our ability to work and live. We also recognize the shared territories of the Coast Salish peoples and the other Indigenous peoples in BC such as First Nations, Non-Status, Metis and Inuit.  Our IXP will be located on the shared territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ(Tsleil-Waututh) territories. We respect the wisdom of the Elders, Leadership, Matriarchs, Knowledge Keepers and Community Members.
